Every now and then when I’m scrolling social media, I see a mom sharing how she was exercising during pregnancy consistently… only to end up with a really difficult birth that ended in a C-section.
Then I scroll through the comments and see people saying things like:
And honestly, I feel for the moms sharing these experiences. It can be incredibly frustrating to feel like you did everything “right” during pregnancy, only for birth to unfold differently than you hoped.
But jumping to the conclusion that exercise causes hard labors isn’t accurate.
Let’s talk about why:

First, it’s important to acknowledge something that often gets overlooked in these conversations:
Birth is unpredictable.
You can do everything “right” during pregnancy and still encounter unexpected challenges during labor.
That’s because birth isn’t only about your body — there’s also another very important variable involved: your baby!
Baby’s positioning, size, how they move through the pelvis, and how labor progresses can all influence how birth unfolds.
Exercise alone doesn’t determine whether birth will be smooth or difficult.
Organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend moderate exercise during pregnancy for most women who have been cleared by their provider.
And for good reason.
Movement during pregnancy can absolutely be a positive thing for both mom and baby.
But there’s an important nuance that often gets missed.
In my experience as a prenatal and postnatal fitness specialist, the real issue isn’t exercise itself.
It’s the lack of education around what the pregnant body actually needs to prepare for birth.
Many people simply continue their normal pre-pregnancy workouts with some modifications as their body changes.
And while staying active is great, that approach isn’t the same as training specifically for labor and delivery.
Birth is a physical event that places unique demands on the body.
It requires:
Most traditional workouts don’t address these things directly.
So someone might exercise their entire pregnancy and still feel unprepared for the physical demands of labor.
This doesn’t mean you need to stop exercising.
And it definitely doesn’t mean being a couch potato is the better option.
What it does mean is that exercise during pregnancy works best when it’s intentional and strategic.
Instead of simply modifying workouts, prenatal training should focus on supporting the body through the specific changes pregnancy brings.
That might include things like:
When exercise is designed with these goals in mind, it can help people feel more capable and confident heading into birth.
While we can’t control every aspect of birth, we can control how we prepare our bodies.
Intentional training during pregnancy helps build:
And that confidence can make a big difference in how people approach birth.
